Parent United have written to all 4 of the Members of Parliaments Redbridge on 26th September introducing Our organisation.

Dear

We are writing to introduce Parents United.

Who are we?

We are a parent-led group created in response to concerns surrounding the Relationship and Sex Education curriculum, which will come into effect in April 2021. Our group is for parents, carers and guardians of all faiths and backgrounds.

We have been engaging with our school and the council since last year.  Following the education scrutiny meeting to voice our concerns in January this year, we met various councillors resulting in a meeting with Council representatives responsible for RSE in February 2020.

What are our aims?

●   Meaningful parental consultation by schools in line with their legal duties.

●  An age-appropriate RSE curriculum that doesn’t undermine the values of parents/families.

●   Implementation- resources and teaching methods that are age-appropriate and factual

●  Assurance that children can voice their perspective respectfully, without the fear of being penalised or reported to prevent agencies and other authorities.

●   A conflict resolution process and RSE watchdog.

What have we been working on recently?

  • We have tried to tackle the serious lack of awareness and educate parents, the compulsory nature of subjects and what it could mean for their families.
  • Concerned by the lack of faith group participation in the consultations done by the Council, we lobbied for a wider representation of all faith communities to engage in the process.

We recently brought in FORMO- Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations to be consulted for Islamic faith and are trying to bring in KICC- Kingsway International Christian Centre.

We are hoping that the council will reach out to other faith organisations who represent the families in Redbridge and meaningfully consult.

  • We are planning to hold a public meeting soon which originally had to be postponed due to Covid, on zoom and will be reaching out to you to invite you to attend if things go as planned.

We hope to bring all community members together and to hear everyone’s opinions no matter what an individual’s take on the new curriculum is, but most importantly give the parents a voice.

Healthy discussion and debate should be encouraged and is the only way a rounded curriculum for all is to be achieved. In our view, unity is our greatest asset.

We are asking for yours and all of Redbridge’s wonderful MPs and councillors to support us in our endeavours for the benefit of all Redbridge residents.

We have parent members from your constituency who are extremely concerned.

We look forward to hearing how you are able to help parents and to pass on your response to parents.

If you like to find out more about our organisation and our activities or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
